Toyota key systems by year

The key Toyota used changed over time. Knowing the year tells you the system and whether it is handled on site. Add a spare while a working key exists and the job stays on the lower end of the range.

Years System On site?
1998–2003 Transponder key (D chip) Spare cloned from a working key, ordered ahead. Yes
2003–2017 Transponder / remote-head key Most Camry and Corolla spare keys in this range are cloned or programmed when a working key is present. Yes
2015–present Smart key / push-to-start Modern Toyota smart systems programmed on site, including RAV4 and Highlander. Yes

When a Toyota is dealer-only

  • All-keys-lost for bladed keys (transponder, remote-head) is not currently offered — the dealer is the path there.
  • A few 2020+ models with the newest security gateway may need a dealer-added key for the all-keys-lost path; spare cloning still works on site.

You are told before I head out, and before any charge, if your vehicle falls in this group.

The honest comparison

A Toyota spare made while a working key exists is the cheapest version of the job — the chip is cloned, no immobilizer session required. The same key originated after the last one is lost costs meaningfully more. A second key today is the cheapest Toyota key you will ever buy.

Questions about Toyota keys

Can you do a Toyota all-keys-lost on site?
Yes for most push-to-start models. The immobilizer PIN is extracted and a new smart fob programmed at the vehicle. The newest security gateway on a small number of 2020+ models is the exception, and bladed-key all-keys-lost is dealer-only.
My Toyota smart key drains fast. Is it the fob?
Often it is the fob battery; a replacement and test is $25. A fob that keeps draining can have a failed proximity circuit and is replaced at the listed range.
